Taking ideas seriously. Taking ourselves lightly.
The blog is named the Bird and Babe as an homage to the Eagle and Child Pub in Oxford, where C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Owen Barfield, and other friends met as a group called the Inklings. The purpose of the Inklings was to discuss. Authors would read their own works and engage in lively discussion of ideas. It was here where works like The Lord of the Rings were first read and discussed among friends. The Inklings were students and scholars from a variety of disciplines with a variety of interests. They shared enough in common to unite them together for mutual benefit and were each different enough to enable lively discussion and differing perspectives. It was hosted in a pub, not a lecture hall; the conversations were both casual and serious.
Such is our goal: to think and talk about ideas that matter…to do so not in a stuffy pedantic way or in a preachy condescending way, but in a casual and engaging way.
“The reason angels can fly is because they take themselves lightly.” –G.K. Chesterton
